Speech Therapy Program for Cleft Palate Speakers Based on Experimental Data
Km Hyun-Gi

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to design a speech therapy program for patients after receiving cleft palate surgery. A nasometer, a visi-pith and a palatometer ( EPG ) were used to analyze patients speech patterns for the presence of resonance disorders, voice disorders and articualtory error patterns. The participants in this study were 27 children who had received cleft palate surgery and 64 children without cleft palates, and 1 adult cleft palate and 1 adult control speaker for EPG study. The results were as follows. First,57% nasalance score of vowel /i/ in participants who had received cleft palate surgery was 3 times higher than that of children who did not have cleft palate . Second, 1.3% jitter of those who had received cleft palate surgery had the voice disorders and a shorter maximun phonation time and lower voice intensity than participants without cleft palates. Third, the EPG showed that participants who had received cleft palate surgery produced a stop consonant when attempting to articulate the sibilant sound /s/. Speech therapy program was then developed based on this experimental study s results.
